Carcinogens in moisturisers - new findings

Researchers at the University of New Jersey recently found moisturising cream had unexpected cancer-causing activity in tests.

Carcinogens in moisturiser

Wellbeing magazine recently reported the following story about moisturisers containing carcinogens.

You don't always find what you are looking for in science (and in life). Researchers at the University of New Jersey were recently investigating the effect of caffeine on the development of skin cancer and happened to use moisturising cream as the carrier, but they found the cream itself had unexpected cancer-causing activity.

The researchers went on to test four common moisturisers on mice. Mice treated with moisturisers and exposed to UV light developed more, larger tumours at a faster rate than mice that were not treated with moisturisers.

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate and Mineral Oil prime cancer suspects

The tumours developed were non-melanoma type and so the least lethal. The researchers suspected the problem agents were mineral oil and sodium lauryl sulphate but said that people should not be alarmed since mouse skin is not the same as human skin. Nevertheless, it is food for thought. Natural skin care strikes us as considerably safer! Source: Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
