Deep cleansing for dusty skins

Hands up whose skin (and lungs, and hair...) feels clogged up, dry and dirty?! Yup, as if an unusual heatwave wasn't extreme enough, Mother Nature has treated us to an apocalyptic dust storm, apparently aimed at making us all feel a lot less glamorous and glowing.
In case you don't have your facialist on speed-dial, here are some simple, cost-free ways to give your skin a great deep-clean without stepping foot outside the house.
Deep clean with steam
One of the simplest and most effective ways to open pores and draw out trapped dirt is a steam facial. It will soothe your irritated throat and lungs too. Simply fill a large bowl with boiling water, add a drop or two of juniper oil (optional but it will help to open the pores more), lean over with a towel draped over your head to trap the steam - and let it work its magic for five minutes!
A word of caution - if you have thread veins or broken capillaries, give this treatment a miss.
Scary oatmeal mask
OK, trust me on this one - it works! This homemade mask contains onion, an anti-inflammatory, and oatmeal which penetrates deeply into the pores, cleaning cell build-up and removing plugs of dirt clogging the pores.
Ingredients
- 29ml mineral water or filtered water
- 3 tablespoons plain organic oatmeal
- 1 medium onion, peeled
Instructions
1. Boil the water and pour it over the oatmeal, letting it steep for five minutes
2. Finely grind the onion in a food processor, making a smooth puree. Add it to the oatmeal while it is still warm.
3. If the mask is not thick enough, add some honey until the mask is thick enough to sit comfortably on your face. You can store the mask in the fridge for one week and use it as often as you like.
