Supermodel Summer Rayne Oakes launches Ikigai

Supermodel and eco-activist, Summer Rayne Oakes, is in Brisbane today to launch new Aussie eco-style magazine, Peppermint, and online organic skincare boutique, Ikigai. Summer Rayne Oakes is a Cornell graduate who uses her global modelling career as a platform to address environmental and sustainability issues. She was recently compared to Al Gore by the New York Times, named as a “Global Citizen” by Vanity Fair and a “Young Person Who Rocks” by CNN.

Summer Rayne found time in her busy schedule of international modelling and speaking appearances to attend a party hosted by Peppermint and Ikigai organic skincare, where she met a select group of Brisbane’s most fashionable and eco-friendly folk, in advance of her appearances at Greenfest this weekend.

The informal gathering took place at the Bleeding Heart Café in Brisbane’s CBD. The venue, based in the historic School of Arts building was chosen for its support of young businesses and social charities and its range of completely organic food and drinks. Local company, Sol Breads, further supported the event with organic catering.

Peppermint magazine is the only eco-style magazine in Australia and was established to create a voice for seriously stylish, ecologically-friendly and ethical fashion.

According to Peppermint editor and founder, Kelley Sheenan, “After food, clothing has the highest environmental impact of all our consumption activities – the amount of water used in the production and transport of clothes bought by the average Australian household each year exceeds 150,000 litres.

"Peppermint isn’t about making us all feel guilty, it’s about injecting some much-needed fun and positivity into an otherwise doom-and-gloom situation. You can be stylish and sustainable at the same time. Many local designers are leading the way in sustainable style and we’re all about showcasing that.”

Peppermint’s beauty editor, Kate Hanson, teamed up with Peppermint and Summer Rayne to launch her new website for stylish men and women wanting to “green” their skincare and beauty routines.

Called Ikigai, the organic skincare boutique offers a variety of hand-picked ranges of luxurious natural and organic skincare products, some of which are entirely new to Australia. All the organic skincare products are free of parabens, phthalates, sulphates and synthetic colours and fragrances, and are not tested on animals. The organic skincare site also offers a wealth of features, news and advice about greening your skin care routine.

According to Kate, “We feel that people have a right to know what goes into their organic skincare products. After all, the skin absorbs up to 60% of anything we put on it, so why would you slather it with nasty chemicals? It can be difficult to decipher the ingredients on the back of the bottle - that’s why we provide a comprehensive glossary of ingredients so that customers can look up every single ingredient of every single organic skincare product we stock, for a simple and honest explanation of what it is.”

Palm oil costs the lives of fifty endangered orangutans every week. In South East Asia alone, the equivalent of 300 soccer fields are deforested every hour for palm oil plantations. Ikigai supports The Australian Orangutan Project with 1 per cent of profits. Ikigai supports Carbon Neutral, turning emissions into trees.
